How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style replacement key for audi a4 transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause audi keys replacement engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these here symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via audi a4 key replacement gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points.
